History of Ubon Ratchathani

Within Thailand’s Isan area lies the province of Ubon Ratchathani, which is well-known for the stunning natural landscapes and pristine preserves that can be found within its borders. Thao Kham Phong, a descendant of Phra Wo and Phra Ta, established the province in the late 18th century. Thao Kham Phong had fled from King Siribunsan of Vientiane into the Siam Kingdom during the reign of King Taksin the Great. King Siribunsan was the ruler of Vientiane at the time. After some time had passed, the city was given the title “Phra Pathum Wongsa” and became the initial ruler of Ubon Ratchathani.

Ubon Ratchathani was designated as a province in 1792 and served as the administrative capital of the Isan region during that time. During the Franco-Thai War of 1940, French forces launched an assault on the city. The city experienced rapid expansion during World War II as a result of Japanese forces transporting prisoners of war by rail from Kanchanaburi. These POWs were survivors of the Burma Railway.

Ubon Ratchathani is well-known for its stunning natural scenery; in fact, the region that Ubon Ratchathani shares a border with Cambodia and Laos is commonly referred to as “the Emerald Triangle” because of the region’s breathtakingly verdant scenery. The course of the Mun River takes it across several plateaus and mountain ranges as it makes its way through the centre of the province.
